The Balance of Old and New Skills

On the Protector preparation path, knowledge exists on two tracks: the timeless skills of the past and the constantly evolving skills of the present. Both carry immense value, and together they create a well-rounded path for growth, resilience, and adaptability.
Think of it like this: if you only study “old school,” you risk becoming outdated. But if you only chase “new school,” you lose the foundation of skills that will help you survive if all goes back to fire and rock. The strongest path is to walk with one foot in old knowledge and the other in innovation.
You must understand that having skills like wilderness survival, trapping, hunting, crafting improvised primitive weapons, setting booby traps and other skills are essential if the world were to go off-grid. But at the same time, focusing only on these will leave you extremely vulnerable to the present and the future.
Technology is advancing rapidly. You now need knowledge in areas like cybersecurity, OSINT, drones, AI, and new gadgets.
A true Protector is not someone stuck in the past, preparing only for an apocalyptic “fire and stone” scenario. A Protector is someone who adapts, learns, and prepares for both present and future threats — ready to safeguard his family and those around him.
Let's take for example the skill of learning to bypass locks and locking mechanisms.
For generations, people studied mechanical locks — their pins, tumblers, and wards — not just to bypass them, but to understand the fundamentals of security. Knowing how these systems work builds problem-solving, patience, and a deeper respect for how things were engineered before digital shortcuts.
At the same time, technology is advancing at lightning speed. To thrive, we need to keep pace.
Tools like the Flipper Zero highlight the importance of this. This little device can scan, emulate, and interact with NFC tags, RFID cards, and even wireless signals. Understanding how to use it teaches us not only about digital security but also about the vulnerabilities hidden in everyday tech. These are the new locks — invisible, silent, but just as real as the tumblers in a padlock.
Mastering these tools keeps us prepared for the modern world. It sharpens digital literacy, awareness of cybersecurity, and creativity in applying technology in responsible, innovative ways.
In a broader sense, this philosophy applies to more than just locks or gadgets. Whether it’s blending analog art with digital design, or pairing herbal knowledge with modern medicine, balance is everything.
The truth is, both old school and new school skills are essential. Understanding where and when each applies is what creates resilience.
If we go back to our example with bypassing locking mechanisms, not every corner of the world runs on cutting-edge tech. In many second- and third-world countries, older systems are still the standard. Mechanical padlocks, simple deadbolts, and outdated lockers are often more common than digital security.
In these environments, being able to pick a lock or bypass a mechanical system can mean the difference between access and being locked out — whether it’s for securing resources, helping someone in need, or handling an emergency situation.
Even in advanced countries, we can’t ignore the possibility of technological collapse. Power grids fail. Networks go down. Wars, disasters, or even solar storms could knock out the infrastructure that modern locks depend on. When the systems fail, the world falls back on the mechanical. And in those moments, old-school lockpicking isn’t outdated — it’s survival.
Other old-school skills like map reading, fire-starting, or mechanical repair might seem “outdated” in the age of smartphones and GPS. But when technology fails, these abilities suddenly become priceless. They are survival skills, but also mindset skills: they teach independence, resourcefulness, and creative thinking.

But if we only train for the past, we blind ourselves to the present. Technology is evolving at a pace that rewrites the rules every year.
Cybersecurity, OSINT, drones, AI, and digital surveillance are the new battlegrounds of access and protection.
Ignoring this reality makes us just as vulnerable as ignoring the old ways. A Protector, a leader, or even a responsible citizen must stay ahead — not just in the wilderness or in off-grid scenarios, but in the modern digital landscape as well.
The Tribe 13 view is about unity, exploration, and growth. Honoring both the past and the future is part of that journey. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty learning the old crafts, and don’t hesitate to dive into the tools of tomorrow. Together, they prepare us not just to survive — but to thrive.
Stay safe all!
